What is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping Therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine. When you come in for this treatment, one of our NJ Spine and Wellness therapists will use special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create a suction. Cupping can be used to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and as a type of deep-tissue massage. The cup may be made of glass, bamboo, earthenware or silicone.

What does Cupping Therapy Entail?

There are two different methods to cupping: dry and wet. During either cupping treatment, a therapist, who is typically a licensed acupuncturist, will heat the cup and then place it upside down on your skin. As the air inside of the up cools, it creates a vacuum seal against the skin. This causes your skin to rise and redden as your blood vessels expand. The cup is generally left in place for about 3 minutes. More modern versions of cupping use a rubber pump to create a vacuum seal. Sometimes the therapist use silicone cups which they can then move from place to place like a massage-like effect.

Typically, a practitioner will use about 3-5 cups during your first session. It is unlikely to get more than 5-7 cups used during a treatment. After treatment you may be given an antibiotic ointment and bandage to prevent the risk of infection. Your skin should look normal again in 10 days.
