Hip Pain? NJ Spine and Wellness has specialists to help you treat chronic pain and Get Better Faster.

Your hip is one of your largest weight-bearing joints. It’s there to support you whether you’re standing in place or walking from one errand to the next. Unfortunately, hip pain is an all too common complaint, especially as you get older.

As you age, you can injure this ball and socket joint. Or, you may develop an underlying medical condition. Anything affecting one of the joint’s many components — whether it’s the bones, muscles, joints, or tendons located in or around the hip area — can also cause you hip discomfort. The pain you experience in your hip can also radiate to other parts of your body, such as down your thigh or in your groin area.

If your hip pain lasts longer than a few days, it’s time to call the orthopedic specialists at NJ Spine and Wellness. We can assess your condition and come up with a treatment plan that addresses your painful symptoms, so you can get on the road to full recovery.

What’s Causing Your Hip Pain?

Hip pain is more common among older adults. However, even children can develop a condition that causes pain in the hip region. During your exam, we’ll determine the precise location of your hip pain to help us determine the underlying cause.

Some of the most common causes of hip pain include:

  • Inflamed tendons or tendonitis
  • Arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Hip fractures
  • Muscle strain or sprain
  • Infection
  • Injury caused by a fall or another accident
  • Aseptic necrosis — when the hip does not receive enough blood flow

Treating Hip Pain

Depending on what’s causing your discomfort, the compassionate and caring doctors at NJ Spine and Wellness will recommend an individualized treatment approach along with pain management techniques. In general, we provide conservative treatment options first, including:

  • Anti-inflammatories: Also called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), this type of medication can relieve mild to moderate hip pain caused by inflammation.
  • Physical therapy: Physical therapy can strengthen the muscles surrounding the joint, as well as increase flexibility, and support a full range of motion.
  • Injections: Injections can relieve hip discomfort and also help our physicians diagnose the cause of your hip pain.

If a nonsurgical approach does not help alleviate your pain, we may recommend a surgical option, such as:

  • Hip arthroscopy: This minimally invasive surgical technique allows the doctor to insert a small optical device through small incisions to view the joint and correct any problems.
  • Hip replacement surgery: The ball portion of the joint is removed, and an artificial joint is fixed into position using a specialized material that ensures the remaining bone attaches to the prosthetic joint.
